Mid Sussex
Football League Premier Division Saturday
21st October 2006 HASSOCKS OFF THE MARK WITH
WIN OVER CHAMPIONS East Grinstead United 1-2
Hassocks
Hassocks were
facing their worst start ever since their
arrival in the Mid Sussex Premier league 4 years
ago, but a truly great performance saw them gain
victory over current league champions East
Grinstead.
In blustery and
bumpy conditions, East Grinstead won the toss
and decided to play with the wind at their backs
hoping to demolish a Hassocks side which has let
in 11 goals in the last 3 games.
However a well
marshaled defence by the 2nd team boss Phil
'soon to be dad' Wickwar saw a much more
confident display by the back unit. In addition,
Scott had purchased some new gloves and looked
like he had managed to avoid the pub the
previous evening which certainly gave him more
confidence in the wet conditions.
By half time,
Hassocks had only conceded 1 and with a bit of
luck Logan may have scored when he latched
quickly onto a rebound of the East Grinstead
cross bar but was unable to find the net.
With Hassocks
still in the game at half time and the wind
behind them they knew they could go on and win
this game in the 2nd half.
Hassocks started
to dominate the play but East Grinstead were
still dangerous on the break and it was Scott
McCarthy who kept them in the game with a
brilliant save when faced with a 1 on 1'. If
East Grinstead had scored them there would not
have been a way back into this game.
This spurred
Hassocks on and they soon equalised when Logan
Newington repeated last weeks trick with a
confident lob from the edge of the area.
A 2nd soon
followed, when Logan's cross was just about
headed in by Steve 'soon to be a grandad' Spies
for his first of the season - although there was
a debate as to whether 'he did or did not' get
the final touch! East Grinstead tried to get
back in the game but they rarely
threatened.
Our first win of
the season and a very good performance to take
into next week game at home to Cuckfield on
Monday 30th October (7.30pm Kick Off).
