HASSOCKS
GO THROUGH WITH RELATIVE EASE
Newhaven
0-3 Hassocks
On
a windy evening at Newhaven Hassocks
progressed in the Reserve Cup with ease with a
3-0 win. Hassocks started well when the exciting
Mike Damario
went through on the left after good
football and the keeper saved well
although he should of squared it for an
open
goal.
The Robins
were never in trouble all evening and
keeper Phil Wickwar didn't get dirty all
night with the Newhaven keeper having
to make saves all night long.
Hassocks
took the lead when the returning leading
scorer Lee Cooke smashed in from close range
after a scramble and before that he should
of scored with a header from five yards but
failed to open his eyes.
The Robins
midfield were always in charge and Dan
Jacques should have scored but pulled
his shot wide.
Second
half was much of the same with Hassocks
defence in control with Andy Wilson playing
well in an unaccustomed role at centre
back due to staff shortages.
Soon
they were two up when after
missing two one-on-ones, John
Thompson finished
his third chance before being replaced
by the elusive Laurence Robinson. After a fine
first start from Damario he was
replaced as well by debut boy Dan Goodrum
who looked comfortable at this
level.
The game was wrapped up as Cooke and
Robinson made a real hash of an open
goal twice but Graham Beveridge was on hand to
drill in a left foot shot into the roof
of the net.
Hassocks
played well in an awkward fixture to
make progress in the cup.
Having used 36 players already, Jewell
and Wickwar are happy with the position
they are in and the strength of the
squad but are still looking in one or
two areas to improve.
