JACQUES
HAT-TRICK SENDS ROBINS THROUGH
Hassocks
4-2 South Bersted
After
a long lay off Hassocks produced a solid
display to progress to the quarter
finals of the Intermediate Cup at the
expense of South Bersted, who fancied an
upset. Jewell
and Wickwar made a few changes to the
team from recent matches with the unlucky
Mark Darbyshire and Alex Ternouth (Ternouth was
particularly unlucky as he has been
reliable as ever) stepping aside for
Ian Church and Phil Wickwar with
Laurence Robinson
partnering Richard Thomas up front after returning
from along injury lay off.
Thomas
will need a few more games before he
starts to push to regain his first team
place and he has been highly motivated with
comments in the press recently. Hassocks
started at 100 miles an hour with the
wind in their favour and after some
great link up play from Thomas and
Robinson, Robinson got in down the right
and pulled the ball back for Dan Jacques for
a simple tap in.
Hassocks
went 2-0 up after a long kick from
Jack Simpson was helped on by Robinson for
Jacques to finish from the edge of the
box with a quite beautiful finish with his left foot
into the far right bottom corner. Jacques then completed a 17 min
hat-trick after the impressive Andy Wilson
put Ian Dawson away down the right and he
delivered a great cross to the far post
for Richard Thompson to lay the ball for Jacques
to drill home at the near post from six
yards.
South
Bersted had no answer to the front two
of Thomas and Robinson and the runs of
Jacques from midfield. In the second
half Hassocks started poorly and were
nearly caught out by a long kick over
the top as South Bersted started to ask
questions with the wind in their favour
getting stronger by the min.
They
got the goal they deserved when a cross
from the left was met with a powerful
header from their number eight (post match it was
Jacques who the finger was pointed at
for the free header). This gave Hassocks
the reminder that they needed after they
thought it was going to be a stroll and
the
defensive trio of Brian Husbands, Wickwar and
Ian
Simpson defended brilliantly as Hassocks
looked to see out the game.
Chuch
was then replaced by Darbyshire, Jacques went
off for Michael Bates and Sam Franks came on for
Dawson. Hassocks got their fourth after the
hardworking front two robbed the keeper
and Thomas finished emphatically into
the empty net from the edge of the box.
With a minute to go Bersted got another
goal after a great block tackle somehow
ricocheted off Hassocks players to fall
to an opponent to finish from
close range.
Hassocks
were happy with the way they had
performed after a long lay off and mentions must got to youngsters Jack
Simpson in goal and Lawrence Robinson
for great unselfish play. Next up is Whitehawk at the
Beacon on the 19th for
a tough Reserve Section Cup clash
