IMPROVED
ROBINS HOLD UNITED
Eastbourne
United Association 0-0 Hassocks
After a couple of
disappointing performances, Hassocks came away from
the Oval with a creditable goalless draw against in
form Eastbourne United Association. United had
previously had impressive wins against Three Bridges
and Horsham YMCA so a point was a good return for
the Robins, although it could have been better for
them had they not been denied what looked like a
stonewall penalty late on.
Referee Simon Griffiths
appeared the only person in the ground to have
missed a clear foul on Hassocks sub Laurence
Robinson but in the end a goalless draw was about
the right result in a game devoid of much goalmouth
action.
United started brightly,
with Nick Pitcher denying Mark Warren with an
excellent challenge, as both teams seemed to be
content with a game of hit and hope or relying on a
defensive error to create an opening.
However after the break
Hassocks looked the better side, with Pitcher
heading a glorious chance over the bar from six
yards, following a fine ball into the box by another
of last season's youth team, Adam Williams. Lucas
Mann missed a good chance for the home side and
Robinson missed a superb chance at the other end,
missing from a couple of yards when it looked easier
to score after a good centre from Ali Russell.
Near the end came the
vehement penalty appeals, Robinson being hauled down
by Carl Harris after outpacing the United defender
but referee Griffiths waved them off and the game
petered out into a stalemate.
Hassocks gave a debut to
former YM defender Glenn Woodburn, who formed a
central defensive partnership with Nick Pitcher.
