GAULT
GOAL PUTS HASSOCKS BACK ON TRACK
Hassocks
1-0 East Grinstead Town
A
FIFTH minute goal by Phil Gault was enough to
give Hassocks a 1-0 home win over lowly East
Grinstead on Tuesday and complete their recovery
from a 6-0 mauling at Three Bridges. Saturday’s
comeback home draw with Crawley Down started the
recuperation and the latest welcome win should
see Dave John’s side now back on an even keel.
It
was a finely balanced contest at the Beacon
after Daley Clark helped on Anthony Hibbert’s
early corner and Gault powered the ball in at
the far post. Home
keeper Joel Harding made a good save to deny
Drew Crush after a poor clearance by skipper
Ashley Marsh on 20 minutes and then later in the
half saved at the feet of Kieran Wilson.
In
between time, EG manager Steve Johnson was
ordered from the bench after a second
confrontation with officials and Robins had
strong penalty appeals for a foul on Nathan
Miles turned down. The
loss of Stuart Faith just before half time was a
blow to the home side. He took a bad knock on
the ankle.
It
was end to end after the break, with John
Sinclair squandering a clear chance for the
visitors before Spencer Slaughter went close
twice in five minutes. He had a header cleared
off the line from a corner and then saw an
excellent chip clawed away by Matt May.
The
visiting keeper later did well to block an
explosive half volley by Gault but was grateful
late on to see James Laing’s 30-yarder curl
narrowly wide and then Gault’s audacious
volley from 40 yards bounce back into his hands
off the inside of a post. EG
also had their chances, as Harding saved from
Sinclair and Marc Pelling.
Hassocks:
Harding; Jacques, Marsh, Bowra, Faith (Thompson,
42), Kublickas; Clark (Laing, 79), Slaughter,
Hibbert; Gault, Miles.
