HIBBERT AT THE
DOUBLE AGAIN
Sidley United
0-2 Hassocks
An
Anthony Hibbert double earned Hassocks a hard fought 2-0 win at
Sidley United to move them up to 3rd in the County
League. It also maintained an unbeaten run of 9 games in all
competitions stretching back to 22nd September.
Sidley,
determined to plug a defence that had shipped 11 goals in the
past two games, decided to play Steve Morris on his own up front
and they certainly made life difficult for Hassocks, who
struggled to break down the home side. Sam Fisk, Spencer
Slaughter and Hibbert all fired over long range efforts and the
onrushing Jon Saunders denied Phil Gault in the Sidley goal. The
best chance of the half fell to Morris who headed a whisker wide
from a Darren Witham free kick, with the Hassocks defence
flat-footed. Neither side created any good chances after this
and it was Sidley who went into half time happier at the clean
sheet achieved.
It
took Hassocks until the 65th minute to break the
deadlock. Mickey Turner, playing as a striker in place of Mark
Sheriff, who was stuck in London, was hauled down by Brad Poole
inside the box. The Sidley defender was booked before Hibbert
sent Saunders the wrong way from the spot. Five minutes later,
Sidley were reduced to 10 men when Gavin Ramsden was red-carded
for an almighty hack on Turner, not once, twice but 3 times.
Referee Slaney had not option but to produce a straight red.
Bizzarely,
Sidley now pushed another man up front in an attempt to salvage
something from the game. However, they were caught out on 76
minutes, Hibbert picking the ball up from halfway, surging
forward before unleashing a fine shot past Saunders from 20
yards for his 15th goal of the season already. Gault
was denied by Saunders as the game opened up. Sidley had their
best two chances in injury time, Morris having a shot delected
wide and then Joel Harding was down smartly to deny the same man
low to his left.

Fisk, Thompson, Marsh, Lear, Faith, Robbins, Slaughter, Hibbert,
Gault, Turner (Thomas 85)
Unused subs:

Man of the
Match: Stuart Faith, did a good job on Steve Morris
