HONOURS
EVEN IN SIX GOAL THRILLER
Hassocks
3-3 Peacehaven & Telscombe
Hassocks
and Peacehaven produced a richly entertaining
evening at the Beacon, where honours ended even
in a six-goal thriller. Both
sides played some good football on a slick
Beacon surface and although both sides perhaps
thought that they deserved all 3 points, in the
end a draw was a fair reflection of events.
Peacehaven
took the lead as early as the 13th
minute, Tom Levitt firing home after a cross had
failed to be cleared but within 6 minutes Stuart
Faith had headed the Robins level from close
range after a scramble, although there may have
been debate as to who got the final touch, Faith
receiving lengthy treatment to a head injury for
his endeavours. Joel Harding saved well from
Carl Dunk and Levitt again before Hassocks took
the lead on 35 minutes, Anthony Hibbert latching
onto a huge clearance from Harding as the away
defence stood lifeless. Hibbert almost made it
3-1 just before the interval but his left foot
half volley flashed wide of the post and the
half ended with bookings for Spencer Slaughter
and Terry Gacias.
Peacehaven
started the 2nd half with more
urgency and knocked the ball around well as
Hassocks struggled to get a grip. They were
rewarded on 58 minutes when Levitt tapped in a
fine cross from Craig Bunch after Arni Kublickas
had headed weakly away. It got worse for the
young Hassocks wing back soon after as he picked
up a booking for a heavy challenge and then
allowed Dunk to turn him and fire past Harding
to give the visitors the lead on 66. Slaughter
tested Jake Buss with a 30 yard drive and both
Neil Kane and James Laing were brought on as the
Robins pressed for the equaliser. And it was the
latter who got his head to Hibbert’s free kick
at the far post on 84 minutes to bring Hassocks
level. In the dying moments both sides could
have won it, Ian Simpson’s rocket header
narrowly flew over the bar and Harding somehow
managed to keep out a double effort from Bunch,
firstly with his hands and then with his feet.
